About Josh

Trained in a Opera Performance at Manhattan School of Music (M.M.) in New York City, Joshua South has sung and taught professionally for 15 years, the result of which is a tried and true professional vocal technique. 

Career highlight performances include a Carnegie Hall debut with the New York Philharmonic, performances at Lincoln Center, Alice Tully Hall, Sarasota Opera, Opera North, and also with such notable performers as Paul McCartney, Julie Taymor, Kelsey Grammer, Kelly O'Hara, and Brian Dennehy.  

Described as "unforgettable" by the New York Times, Joshua has toured to Brazil, Italy, China, and Austria, performing with world-renowned symphonies in esteemed venues. 

New to the Boulder, Colorado, Joshua is pleased to open a new voice studio to serve the front range.

Joshua is a proud member of Actors Equity (AEA), Screen Actors Guild SAG/AFTRA, and the American Guild of musical Artists (AGMA).

FAQs

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I teach voice BUILDING. I will help your voice grow bigger, stronger, louder, and more agile, allowing you to fully express your emotions and artistic direction. You will gain strength in your Belt, Mix, Falsetto Coordination, Chest Voice and Head Voice. The technique is applicable to Musical Theater, Jazz, Opera, Pop, Rock, Rap... anything and everything that is sung.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Master of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music Bachelor of Music degree from Birmingham Southern College. I've sung withI'm a proud member of Actors Equity (AEA), Screen Actors Guild SAG/AFTRA, and the American Guild of musical Artists (AGMA).

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I started after my Masters Degree, and have loved seeing the progressions of my students for the past 15 years.

What types of customers have you worked with?

All ages - from 8 year-old students to 70 year-old students

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I have been the vocal instuctor of an ensemble, and it was wonderful to see all of the singers improve and be able to express themselves through their singing voice.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

There are a million voice teachers out there. Choose your teacher wisely! Ask around - look for the students of the teachers - do you like how they sound? I've been singing professionally in New York City and all over the world for over 15 years. I know how to teach the technique to keep your voice SAFE, which is the most important part of singing. I am happy to bring my experience and technique to the Boulder area.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

As a young person, think about whether your teacher will help get you ready for college auditions - you can pay for a lot of your schooling if you get a vocal scholarship. As a college student or as a young professional, think about whether your teacher will get you ready for major auditions. Can you sing that song/aria/tune? What about that high note? What about the artistic integrity of the piece?
